Fr. Robert Hussey Convokes Maryland Province Congregation

Fr. Robert Hussey, SJ, officially convoked a Maryland Province Congregation today. Today’s announcement follows news of the 36th General Congregation convoked by Fr Alfonso Nicolas, SJ, the Father General of the Society of Jesus, in Rome yesterday. Father General further directed Provincials to summon a Province Congregation which must be concluded by July 31, 2015.  The Province Congregation will be held at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2015,  and will aim to conclude by Thursday, June 4, 2015.

The primary task of the Province Congregation will be to choose Electors and their Substitutes  who will accompany Fr. Hussey to the 36th General Congregation in Rome. Father General has also asked all Province Congregations to address the following question: “Meditating on the call of the Eternal King, what do we discern to be the three most important calls that the Lord makes to the whole Society today.” In his announcement, Fr. Hussey commended this question to the prayer and community discussions in the coming months.

In addition, Fr. Hussey appointed four of the ex officio members of the Province Congregation to join him on the preparatory commission (coetus praevius). Fathers Ronald Amiot, Vincent Conti, Brendan Lally, and Timothy Stephens, together with Fr. Hussey, will begin the process of electing delegates and soliciting postulates. The role of the preparatory commission is to The scrutinize the election, certifying the validity and legitimacy of the ballots, and to review other matters in preparation for the Province Congregation. Ballots for the Province Congregation and more information will be mailed shortly.

Fr. Hussey closed his letter with a prayer request, “As the Society of Jesus looks forward to the 36th General Congregation and we prepare for the Province Congregation, I ask each member of the Province and all of our communities to keep both Congregations as a daily intention in your Masses and prayers.”
