Fr. Mark Horak, SJ, has been missioned to serve as pastor at St. Thomas More parish in Decatur, Georgia, effective February 1, 2016 when the Maryland Province assumes care of the parish. With the Cristo Rey School and the Ignatius House Retreat Center nearby, the new parish will create an integration of opportunities for service, education, and deepening of faith in the Atlanta area.
Fr. Horak entered the Society of Jesus in 1985. He did his philosophy studies at Fordham University in New York, and his theology studies at Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was ordained a priest in Baltimore in 1994.
Since ordination, Fr. Horak practiced immigration law in Baltimore, founding and directing a non-profit legal services program under the auspices of Catholic Charities for eight years. He subsequently served as parochial vicar at St. Peter's Church in Charlotte NC in 2002, as pastor at Old St. Joseph's Church in Philadelphia PA from 2003 to 2008, and as pastor at Holy Trinity Church in Washington DC from 2008 through September 2015.
"I am excited about going to St. Thomas More," says Fr. Horak. "I hope I can be of service not only to the people of the parish, but also to the larger Church in Atlanta."
