Fr. George Hohman, SJ, a native of West Virginia who enjoyed many years at Wheeling Jesuit University, dies at 90

Rev. George R. Hohman, SJ, was born in Elm Grove, WV on August 12, 1925. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Wheeling, WV and entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, PA in 1947. Upon receiving his BA from Weston College, he taught mathematics as a Jesuit scholastic at Gonzaga High School in Washington, DC. He was ordained to the priesthood in June 1958 and received a Master’s in Physics from North Dakota University.

As a Jesuit priest, Fr. Hohman began his work continuing to teach math, physics and religion at a number of high schools, including St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia, Bishop’s Latin School in Pittsburgh, Loyola High School in Baltimore and again at Gonzaga High School. He also served a number of years at the Maryland Province Jesuits offices as Secretary to the Provincial and Assistant for Formation and Studies. In 1977, Fr. Hohman began directing retreats and serving as minister at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, PA where he had started his own journey as a Jesuit 30 years earlier. He then spent six years directing retreats in the Spiritual Exercises at Loyola Retreat House in Faulkner, MD.

In 1992, Fr. Hohman returned to West Virginia and began his tenure at Wheeling Jesuit University where he would stay until 2014 with a brief stint directing retreats at the Jesuit House of Prayer in Hot Springs, NC. While at WJU, he assumed many roles, from pastoral minister and assistant chaplain of campus ministry to professor of physics and counselor for international students.

Fr. Hohman then came back to Baltimore to live at the Colombiere Jesuit Community where he continued praying for the Church and the Society of Jesus. In 2016, he moved to Manresa Hall in Philadelphia where he died on April 20, 2016 at age 90.

Father General Arturo Sosa, SJ, has officially decreed the uniting of the Maryland and USA Northeast Provinces into one USA East Province, effective July 31, 2020.

The Jesuits of Washington, D.C. joined together at Georgetown’s Dahlgren Chapel to celebrate those with jubilee years in the Society of Jesus.
