Fr. Peter Clark, SJ, Leads Hospital Grand Rounds in Palestine
On Thursday June 21, 2018, Fr. Peter Clark, SJ, director of the Institute of Clinical Bioethics at Saint Joseph's University, gave Grand Rounds (a formal presentation by an expert of a clinical issue) to the entire medical staff at Caritas Baby Hospital in Bethlehem, Palestine. Caritas is one of the hospitals under the Institute of Clinical Bioethics at Saint Joseph's University. It is a Catholic hospital run by five Italian Franciscan nuns and is considered the best Pediatric hospital in Palestine.
The Sisters treat mostly Muslim children on the West Bank and Gaza. The Grand Rounds topic was on "Ethical Decision Making at the End of Life." Fr. Clark led a discussion on brain death and minimally conscious states. There were also two cases presented on brain death and medical futility.
Members of the Ignatian family joined thousands of others in cities across the country in protest of the separation of over two-thousand immigrant children from their families at the United States-Mexico border.
